Benches in Birchgrove shopping district -Update!

Following Fenella’s request for the Council to check the safety of the benches that have been installed in Birchgrove as part of the Regeneration Scheme, following a nasty accident in which an elderly person tripped over one in the dark and had to be taken to hospital, we have noticed that both benches have been removed!

These benches, which were black and about 40cm in height, have been criticised by residents for their unsuitability as seating.  With no back, and so low to the ground, they were becoming more of an obstacle than a useful addition to the street area.

Fenella said ‘These particular benches would have worked well around the base of a tree, but they simply looked out of place and were not suitable for use by the less mobile’.
